Comments:
general
I love the stories in the contest so far. I can't wait to read the rest.
Normally I don´t like slash, but these stories are so well written that I was willing to overlook some scenes which are not my taste.
When I first saw the challenge I wished that I could have come up with a story. Overall, I'm really disappointed with the quality of the stories submitted. They're of much less quality than the first contest. Oh, well, the first sequel is never as good as the original story or the second sequel. Maybe the next one's stories (contest, that is) will be better.
All truly impressive entries; I tip my hat to each author. I love having these stories to read and I thank you for providing the inspiration and the forum, and all of them for their efforts.
Why all this terrible darkness and violence with poor Methos, even when he has supposedly repented and reformed?
sorry to disturb, but i'm not sure as to how fair this all works out to the later posted stories. can you possibly explain it a bit more clearly to me? just curious -- but i certainly wanted to read all of them first before i even started voting. love the contests, though, and your artwork always. what's the word on the cd? thanks for such a superb site. ta.
I think you would get very different ratings if the stories had titles (maybe even short summaries) instead of numbers... I started reading the first story because it was the one most read even though as it turns out, it wasn't better than the last one. Just a suggestion. The site is cool anyway though!
Comment: Where do I start? I loved them all! Overall, every story
was WONDERFUL, very hard to pick just top winners as you can see by my
votes. Please keep the contest as regular feature on your site!
You really are inspiring the writers thoughts with your vision. Thank
you.
I think the auther could have develop more the characters thoughts and feelings. It would have made the story more real, or maybe I should say it would have made us closer to the characters. Also, I feel like the story does not fit entirely with the picture.
[Consider this note represents several requests for more precision editing on this piece...hey, I spell-checked...sorry, Eng]
I thought that the picture and the story fit really well. However, I think the author could have elaborate a little bit more the story.
The story was perfect for the ending.
It lived up to the cover. Master forger and Celtic slave.
Cool! I liked how you worked it into the series time frame. I hope this becomes a series. :o)
Well written and interesting.
It's a good story... Although the mistakes didn't detract too much from the story, it could have used a better edit.
The story just seemed to move too fast...and Duncan was too much the hero for 73 years old, while Methos didn't have much to do except react. But the seduction and sex scenes were great.
Story 1 - loved the page-melting sex; the dynamic between D & M.
(1.) was lovely. The sex was good, the story about the horse was good, and Duncan seducing Methos was great!
The end of story 1- when Duncan and Methos re-meet was a very nice touch!
Story 1 would be 'PERFECT' with a better beta-read. I just hope there would be a sequel.
If it was possible to give any higher ratings I would give story 1 and story 6 at least 6
This was a very good storyline, classic romance novel material. I did think there could have been a little more tension between Duncan & Methos before they gave in to the inevitable, but then, I'm a sucker for angst. Very hot sex scenes, & the tie-in to the show was good, too.
I think story 3 could move into the excellent category with a little careful editing and tightening. I thought the characters were well done. A clever way to eliminate Caspian yet let him live to follow canon. I would have loved to see Methos and Duncan met again. Maybe the author with write a follow-up.
I don't know what the criteria was for writing these stories, but just from having read the first story, it was very powerful. Wow! I can't wait to read the others.
Very nice. The descriptions were very vivid. It was easy to "see" the imagery. The characterizations were also very good.
Loved it, especially the way Mac just goes right in there and takes what he want's, sweeps the Old Man off his feet. Just loved it. <EG>
Story #1. I hesitated to say this for fear of sounding hopelesslypedantic, but what the heck. <g> I know English history isn'teverybody's field, and I don't expect a lot of research for a story like this, but there is a limit. If you're going to premise your whole plot on a political intrigue between "royal courts," at least set it at a time when the "royal courts" existed. The story specifically said 1655, I think it was, and even mentioned Cromwell at the beginning, so it wasn't a typo. But that's during the only time since the 12th century when there *was* no monarchy in England. And after 1603 there wasn't one in Scotland either.I know, the politics isn't *really* the point <g>, but the settingwas so muddled it messed up the whole story for me. Sorry.(Ok, I've got it out of my system now. I'll behave.) :-) Author replies: Please note: Any historical reference is taken from the Encyclopedia, ‘The Timetables of History.’ By Bernard Grun. Based upon Werner Stein’s **Kulturfahrplan.**
Story 1: I agree with the previous comments on spell & tense
checking (beta-read) was needed more, On the other hand, you (Eng) run
the QC site, give us all those lovely cyber-etches, and STILL find time
to write fanfic?! TRUST me, you're forgiven for not having done a closer
beta-read of all the entries. Back to comments: Yes, modern language
in the story such as Common Era, Bondage (when referring to BDSM) do bother
but it wasn't enough to distract completely from enjoyment of the story.
I do have one pet-peeve, it bugs the living hell out of me in every
story I see it in: Peter Wingfield's hair is NOT black. ARGH! Ok,
breathe.. Sorri! I don't mean to break with netiquette and shout(CAPS)
but tho I've not had the pleasure of seeing or meeting Mr. Wingfield, I'm
not blind! His hair appears to be light to medium chestnut brown with auburn
and gold highlights. People need to bear in mind the lighting effects,
both indoors and out, in various of his 21 HL eps. Even Adrian's!
admittedly black hair has red highlights when viewed in clear direct light.
Granted, my pet peeve, but it gets me in story more than incorrect language
for era, misspells, typos, tense errors. All said tho, I LOVED the
story! Love-making scenes VERY hot, relationship between DM/M proceeded
thru trust levels very nicely. LOVED the ending (March 6th, 1995.)Nice
touch
Gosh I loved the part where Duncan rode back to Him, and I just had this feeling he would. :o)
I feel the fool to be critical since I don't have the talent to be a writer. That said, I felt there were missing scenes in this story. I kept craving for just a little more depth in Duncan and Methos' relationship. A little more drama in the confrontation with Kronos. Just a little more.
But my favorite so far is absolutely Story 2: no flaw, no break in the development of the story.
Happy ending! I hate the guys being separated.
I would have rated this story "excellent" but for the fact that the ending felt rushed. That threw the pace of the story off enough to be jarring.
Story 2 - loved D's pursuit of M at the end and the lovely happy ending.
2 was pretty funny, too. Poor Methos.
This one was pretty good for a short story, but I felt it could have used more development of the changing relationship between Duncan & Methos. I didn't get a good feel of the thoughts & feelings they were going through, especially when Kronos captured Duncan.
Story 2 was the most fun to read.
The humor and original secondary characters in Story #2 added a tremendous amount to this tale.
I like the style of the second story very much.
Story #2. I enjoyed this one. It was fun, especially Methos'reactions to the village and the situation with the girl who triedto make him marry her. Getting caught with Duncan was oneway to get out of it ("logic kicked in..." lol).
Story 2: Great use/reseach of place names. Nice touch, added to believability. Same complaint tho, like story 1, "hots for each other" doesn't fit Methos' thoughts unless established he's thinking back to this era from the vantage point of the 20th century. Again, noticed, wasn't enough to detract from enjoyment of story. Love that Methos' love of Duncan spurs him to confront Kronos, well played. Adored happy ending.
No.
3:
Well written, to topic and has a plot and intrigue.
I Really dislike a story that portrays Duncan as a whimpering, crying, helpless victim of fate. Even the very young Duncan we saw in canon, when he first encountered Cassandra in the woods, was not as emotional and helpless and he was portrayed.
I thought this was a very good story. The slash was well written.
The stories theme was as suggested (DM/M/Horse).
of the (first) 4 entries, this is my favorite.
Beautiful and heartbreaking.
These comments are for story #3. Too bad I can't rate it more than 5pts. It had all the elements that I find interesting in this type of fiction. It was a, "first time" story. It was a different kind of romance. It had angst. There was unfortunately torture. But, fortunately a rescue It had m/m sex, and caring between the two main characters. The literary skill that I saw in the writing also, bespeaks a talent the writer can transfer to other genre.
Just about as perfect as a story can be. I'm not into the torture bit and tend to read over such parts quickly but I don't think in this story that the 'torture' was overdone. My only regret is that Methos is not allowed enough wisdom to realize that revenge is uselss and stupid. I have never seen the point revenge makes in any story, or in real life for that matter. Methos should have just beheaded Caspian and gotten it over with .. but that's just MHO :-)
I really liked this one,but the desciption of Caspian wasn`t very accurate. He isn`t bigger than Methos.
This story should have been longer. It was too abrupt...it's hard to explain. Each section was complete yet...each needed more depth, or substance. Like after eating Chinese food an hour later you're hungry again?..well at the end of the story I still felt hungry. Does that make any sense?
Story 3 just overall terrific writing and plotting. Waiting for the Turk to be evil, and get <shudder> Caspian!
3 was a great story. I was horrified by what Caspian did to sweet Duncan! And it was a wonderful, bittersweet ending, too. Bravo!
story 3 was magnificent, loving and angst filled. a great methos characterization, loved the ending with Darius. makes sense to me!
This story seemed to treat Duncan as if he were a very young child. Even though he was very inexperienced, it seemed to be that he was only a teenager to the author. I just wish that it continued on into the present and dealt with Duncan's responses and feelings when he met Methos again.
Comment: This was my favorite story. The plot & character development was excellent & the sex scenes were beautifully written. There was also the perfect amount of angst (GIMME MORE!!). This one definitely gets my vote for 1st place!
W-e-l-l... I liked the third story a lot, but I'm just a little bit overfed with stories of "Methos being haunted by the Horsemen", and then I want to end the two up together, dammnit! But besides that, it was great.
Story 3: Very good,Sad end:(, great use Caspian! Story 4:
Funny! Loved Fitz, Tempest & sex toys!
(4) was to read like a lovestory from Hedwig Courths-Mahler (= german Writer from begining of this century, specialized in 'innocent young girl marries not so innocent noble lord') transported in the Highlander-Universe; really fun.
Comment to story 4: It was really funny, but the characterisation could have been better. I couldn``t see the people portraited in this story as being Duncan or Methos.
A gigglefest... Such melodrama... A riot. And I loved Tempest!
I really, really, really liked no. 6 but in all fairness can't give it a 5 only because it didn't stick to the blacksmith motif. It could win for best gothic adaptation, couldn't it? Okay, so that's not a real catagory. Maybe next year.
Whoever wrote Story No. 4 is an absolute nutcase! I love it!!
Loved your story. The only problem I had was with the last chapter. Felt it was subject to a great deal of editting. Was that because of the 100 page guideline? Maybe it is just me, the other chapters contained such detail and this one seemed abrupt.
Great story; so funny and sweet. It read like the author had a fun time writing it. I loved all the 'inside' jokes.
Story 4 was funny and cute, just a little disjointed to me.
I got a lot of laughs out of 4, too. It was hilarious, actually! heheheh Especially when Duncan poisoned Methos! And the horse was a great character!
Story 4 is full of lots of funny things that makes me laugh & laugh & laugh & laugh. It's also the most follow-the-rule story.
Story 4 is hysterical. Really Very funny.
thought story 4 was extremely humorous.
I wish the rating scale was higher, this one is the best I've read so far.
Story 4: Totally wicked & totally fun. It's been a long
time since I laughed out loud (loudly too) during a story. I guffawed through
the entire thing. Very sweet & romantic, hilarious characterizations
of D and M.
Story 5 would have been really good if the author(s) had developed Duncan's attempted seduction more. Methos' capitulation was a bit abrupt, too. Pity. I really enjoyed the first half of the story.
The approach you took was refreshing. I enjoyed the whimsy and wit. Loved the ending. Your story is definitely on the read again list.
Story 5 - liked the setup; the ongoing same-time, twenty-years idea. Just couldn't get the picture of who exactly M was narrating the story to. Joe?
I thought 5 was really, really funny! But I would have also loved to see the scene wherein Methos actually took Duncan! I liked the girl, I liked it all.
Story 5 was an interesting way to tell the story. Loved Methos remarks while he was telling the story. Very amusing.
Story 5:I really liked the humour in this one and the interaction between D/M was believable, too.
I really enjoyed #9 and #10 very , very much. I also liked the wit and humor of #5. Thanks.
Story #5. This one was good, too. The frame of Methos telling the story was funny. I would have liked to know who he was telling it to, if it's anybody we know. The ending was nice. Always a sucker for getting them back together!
Story 5: 20th cent,to Joe? Great plot device! Loved Methos loving
Mac enuf to let go & so wins.
I'm afraid the story of Jane Eyre has never been one of my favorites. And Methos as Jane is particularly miscast...IMHO. ;-)
I just have to say that the take off on Jane Eyre stole my heart. That's one of my favorite stories of all time and to see it done as a D/M piece was wonderful. Loved how the author worked the "stile scene" into the Tempering Forge pic.
I really enjoyed 6 probably more because Duncan and Methos were presented as equals. Not to mention neither of them were raped. I thought the character interaction was just wonderful! Hooray! More!
If it was possible to give any higher ratings I would give story 1 and story 6 at least 6
Story 6 was a lot of fun to read. Having read Jane Eyre at least four times it was interesting to see how the author wove the characters into this classic. The style was well done and the characters well honed for this role.
Loved this one!
# 6: Highlander meets Jane Eyre. And it even works! Great!
Story #6. The Jane Eyre story. The idea is terrific. (I have always resisted the idea of anybody else being Mr Rochester after Timothy Dalton, but I'd make an exception for Adrian! Cool idea!) And it's nicely done. The only complaint I have is, I wish it had gone further, and branched a little more away from the book. Most of Duncan's dialogue seems to come straight from the book, which means he sounds like Mr Rochester, rather than being recognizably Duncan. The Methos part is nicely adapted, so I wish we'd had more Duncan the same way. Getting the Double Quickening in there was clever - good way to get the house burned down! And the mad wife as an Immortal <snerk>! Though looks like Duncan (or someone...) would have just whacked her and put her out of everybody's misery. But sending her to Sean Burns for a cure - I got a kick out of that.
Story 6: J.Eyre: YUMMY! Uh, now-where's Richie?
[consider this note represents several comments on my not putting an extra disclaimer re: pederasty on this story. Eng]
Perfect story. I can't think of one thing about that is lacking.
Story 7 just blew me away, so imaginative! Great use of Cassandra, Ahriman, and bits & pieces of the series in such an alternative universe that no one from TPTB would recognize their own stuff.
Story 7 was, SUPER, EXCELLENT,FANTASTIC....MELODRAMATIC....WAAAAY OVER THE TOP<G>Interesting way the episode blended into the story. Loved the Master.
Story 7:I really liked the plot. The author took parts of the aired context and wove it into a new and intriging story.
# 7: Definitely has the 'wow-factor': powerful & intensive, just feels *right* with nothing to disturb the atmosphere. Great writing!!!!
Story #7. I was so impressed with this one! Fabulous ideas! The parallelism thing of Duncan becoming Death in Methos' place is just incredible. And the Master turning out to be Ahriman the demon was great, too. So many fascinating things in this story. (Is this one Rory's? I think the prologue part is the best-written thing of hers I've seen. Just marvelous. Methos' sword "of iron and blood".... Great!) Very imaginative the whole way through. I'll remember this one. Story #8. This one is my favorite. It's violent, but one of the best approaches I've seen to the "Methos-as-Death" problem - that is, how could the Methos we know ever have been, and remained, a Horseman. Catches all the contradictions in his nature. And very well-written. Catches Kronos, too, and the way they interact. I like most everything about this one. Definitely the best one, IMHO.
Story 7: WOOF! Glad that Arhiman actual rapist. LOVED spiritual handfasting
& use of Alexa. Story
This should rate a 10!!! It not only holds true to the challenge, but tells a wonderful story and leaves a sense of satisfaction.
Story 8 - well, I just loved having Kronos come take a bow and get whacked.
Interesting to see the intermingling of Methos' different personalities from gentle to brutal to hopeless and vulnerable. Hard-hitting in places and very sensuous in others. Thought it was very well written.
Story # 8 is the very best of the lot! Both Duncan & Methos are believable and remain within character despite the AU format. The story is extremely well thought out & well written. The spiritual theme of healing pulls it above the casual violence typical of HL and the earlier era in history. Though I've rated a number of the stories a 5, I must choose Story #8 as the best. It deserves the award and much praise for a tight, exciting, passionate, and heart warming story. Thank you.
Story 8:This one has one of the best Methos characterizations I`ve ever read-it`s my favourite up to now.
Story #8 drew the greatest emotional response from me.
best of the lot-uses similar approach to many of the others but does it MUCH better- better plotted and definitely better written. I can see the canon as well as fanon Methos and Duncan here, for the first time.
Regarding Story 8: I felt the potrayal of Methos was very in character with his time as Death. He did seem somewhat schizoid, however, after living 5000 years, I assume that is a hazard of survival <g>.
8: Doc Adams broke my heart! EXCELLENT story!
#9 is by far the best of the lot. In a class by itself!
Story 9 is great! I too paused when Methos said there were no women Immortals. I was quite astonished, and certainly never figured out WHY he would say such a thing! I thought perhaps this tale was a universe without female Immortals.
Excellently done! A moral tale to be sure as well as a most enjoyable journey.
You knew I would love this and I did...very much but such a sad ending...
Well written and very well crafted.
Wow. Story 9 just blew me away.
Very intense, finely written, deeply felt. Loved the way the author
carried the image of the forge through the story and their relationship.
Even loved the unhappy ending, and I'm a sucker for happiness.
My compliments to the author on a fine job.
I loved story 9, but it had a sad ending :-(. Would it be possible to have a sequel? I thought the characters were so cute together, I want them to have a happy ending.
Story 9 I just loved. It's bittersweet and sharp and beautiful and has exactly the right length.
Depressing ending.
Thought this was wonderful. Don't really have any other comments.
This was the most original story of the lot. The writing was clever and the story almost bounced along it was so well crafted. The humor was subtle and the characters were well drawn. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd love to see a sequel.
A beautiful and sad story. Superb craftsmanship. I liked the way you worked in Methos' past with the Horsemen.
I quite liked Story #9, although I think it was a fault not to explain why Duncan blew off seeking Connor even if he meant to return to Mander.
Just read 9. Wanted to start at the last and move towards the first. If this isn't Eng's story, I'd be *very* surprised. <g> It was terrific, full of imagery and you're usual rich language and characterizations. And ending with a sad twist, of course.
Story 9:I don't like it at all.Neither the characterisation of Methos nor Duncan is believable. And Methos "washing his hands in fire"-you know Methos isn't doing guilt(okay he does but he is more intelligent to do it this way).So Duncan decided to sleep with Methos because there are no female immortals, and then he discovers otherwise and punches Methos-I just can't believe that Duncan is a). so dumb b). so intellectual about his relationships (okay so there are no women immortals, let's try a guy) and c). so coldblooded.
Well written, like #8, and a nice twist to have Duncan an equal, a partner, right away. The ending fits the intricacies of their relationship, and the ways they do and don't fit together (so to speak).
Beautifully written and researched. Language is consistent with the period. The Methos/Mander character is interestingly complex, somewhat dark, and believable at the stage of personal development he is at for the timeline. Loved it, even though the ending was necessarily real, yet sad and unhappily wrenching for Mander (& the reader).
Superbly crafted with great care. I loved it!
I really enjoyed #9 and #10 very , very much. I also liked the wit and humor of #5. Thanks.
Story #9. The Mander story. I really liked this one, too. RecognizablyEng <g> - nobody does quite what you do with a metaphor! Sticksclosest to the scenario and the illustration (which is stunning, btw).Following the metaphor of the forge through the story is intriguing.(Though Methos' fire ritual gives me the shivers - eewww!) Veryinteresting and well-done. I would have given it a 5 if the endinghadn't been so terribly sad! (As mentioned before, I'm a sucker fora happy ending.) Effective, though.
Story 9: Gee, dragon refs? Gotta be Eng's story! Great story
and LOVED emotion used tho sad :( end.
Story #10 - Finally! From the blacksmith's forge comes a diamond to shine brightly amongst the blackest coals! Brava!
Comment: Very hot. Would love to know when they finally got back together.
Comment: Yowza! Mama! I would like to personally thank the author for keeping me up 'til 2:30am when I have to be up at 6. D*mn fine writin'. Not to hard, not to soft, juuuuuuust right. So, when can we expect the sequel? Let's see.... Gone With the Horsemen? The Slash Also Rises? Uncle Methos' Cabin? Cat on a Hot 10 Immortal? (w/ "Methos the Cat," JB & Burl Ives, both singers, coincidence?Hmmmmm..., I think not.) The Night They Drove Ole Methos Down? (OK, so it's a song) A Streetcar Named Duncan? (you know you wannasee a hot, sweaty, distraught Methos on thestreet below tearing at his white t-shirtscreamin' DUN-CAN!!!!, or would it be better the other way as ME-THOS!!!!yeah, I think that's it) Pleeease?
I have *two* favorites now! Story #10 was absolutely outstanding!!!!!
Not *quite* the story line you asked for but *excellently* done. I really liked that Mac and Methos both learned something and helped each other.
This was an extremely well crafted story. The pacing was perfect, moving smoothly from point of view to point of view. The tone fit the time period and subject. Methos and Duncan were written in character and portrayed as they might have been in this time period. I like the way it slid into canon with Methos going to New Orleans and Duncan working for the underground railroad. Very good use of HL timelines. Kudos to this author.
Story 10 is fantastic. Duncan is not a wimp. Methos is not a wimp. They are both strong men, though Duncan is ignorant in this tale of what he is, he does not become a basket case either when nearly raped by whazzisname, or seduced by Methos. I thought it was nice and realistic, too!
Story 10:Interesting setting and plot and good characterisation of Duncan MacLeod.
I liked the story and the characters, but poor Methos was sad to watch Duncan leave.
The Old South, evil overseers -- ya gotta love it. Add some Byron in for good measure, a lovely bittersweet ending. Yikes. Maybe I should have rated it higher...
Okay, so it did and didn't follow the original premise, but nicely done and by far the best, most erotic sex scenes.
This is a wonderful story; creatively plotted and beautifully crafted. But the best part was the characterizations. A strong Duncan. A strong Methos. Nary a wimp in sight. This is clearly my favorite and I'd rate it a 10 if I could.
A great story, just perfect really.
I really enjoyed #9 and #10 very , very much. I also liked the wit and humor of #5. Thanks.
Story #10. I see a lot of people like this one. I liked it too. It's wellconstructed and well-written, and gets Duncan more like himself thanmost. And makes more of an effort to connect to events in the series timeline. Historically respectable, and doesn't make me cringe the way stories set in the "Old South" too often do (speaking as a native Southerner whose ancestors were there <g>). I enjoyed this one, but still like #8 the best. Thanks for the contest. I enjoyed reading all of them, and the votingelement adds interest. Intriguing to see what other people think.
Story 10: WOW! Great OC bad Immie Rankin, wonderful love story, great
use of New Orleans & Underground Railroad for Methos & Mac.
Sad :( apart at end tho you know 3/6/95 Paris meeting will follow in this
author's AU.
